Hola, hola! My name is Melissa and I’m here because I believe hair is a huge part of someone’s identity and roots. My parents are from Guatemala and I was born in Los Ángeles. Coming from a Latino household, all my childhood I had waist length hair because that is what my mom loves, it is her idea of beauty standard. Once I started high school I felt that long hair didn’t represent me anymore. From that moment and on I’ve been experimenting with all kinds of lengths and styles and feel that it’s a way to express myself without words and it’s not limited to one style.
During high school I was drawn to low-maintenance hair routines and wore my hair naturally. I used to cut and dye my own hair and friends’ hair when they asked me to. After working a couple of years as a graphic designer I went back to school because I realized I needed a more creative environment to be able to grow in. I was lucky enough to have friends to encourage to work with hair.
Design and art have always been my calling in life. I have painted, created digital art, dabbled in photography, designed and made jewelry, and now I am sculpting shapes with shears and hair. I love to create shape and movement for clients when they’re feeling like their hair is lifeless or needs a change. Working at Thairapy fit into exactly what spoke to me as an artist.
I want anyone that’s in my chair to feel heard, understood and safe. I want my clients to feel the connection to their ethnic roots through their natural hair texture by learning how to take care of it and wearing it without fear.
He experimentado con pintura, fotografía, arte digital y he creado mi propias joyas.
